Understanding Court Filing

What is a court filing service?

A court filing service physically delivers filing-ready documents and client instructions to a courthouse, clerk’s office or other designated legal destination.

Court filing may involve submitting a new complaint, motion, pleading, affidavit, proposed order, exhibit package or other document to the appropriate clerk. Depending on the assignment, the client may also request available filing confirmation, file-stamped copies, copies from the clerk or delivery to another legal office.

ELS acts as a legal-support courier and filing agent based on the instructions supplied by the client. The client remains responsible for preparing legally sufficient documents, selecting the correct court and division, identifying the filing method, calculating deadlines and providing all required filing fees or payment instructions.

Some courts require or permit electronic filing, while others may accept in-person submissions for certain matters. ELS does not provide legal advice or decide whether a document must be filed electronically, in person or through another method. We carry out the filing-ready assignment as instructed and communicate when a clerk identifies an issue that prevents completion.

01

Client-Prepared Documents

The client uploads complete documents that are ready to file and provides the required court and assignment details.

02

Courthouse Delivery

ELS delivers the filing package and instructions to the designated clerk or legal destination within the accepted assignment.

03

Confirmation & Return

Available clerk information, receipts or file-stamped copies are returned to the client according to the order instructions.
